My review of the Framework Laptop. This is the best laptop you can get right now if you want a completely repairable and upgradeable device.

This device is TOO COOL!!! PLEASE U.S. GIVE IT TO ME! Don't Kill this great idea/revolution in Laptops. The lack of repairability in laptops is why I DON'T Buy them! It feeds throw away culture. They're a gamble of tech. It's Why I'll keep Desktop PC's Alive for as long as I live.

@Peter Njeim Okey I understand your point. Yes, it is true, the hardware that notebooks have today is not bad. But technology and more in the world of computers advances by leaps and bounds. A very good example is the appearance of Thunderbolt. And it's literally impossible for a relatively old laptop to have it. Now thanks to a modular pc, it is simply to take out one of its modules and replace it. It is as simple as each user having their computer, made to measure and personalized. For example: You like magnetic chargers, well you can install a module that has this, and if you don't like them, you are not obliged to do so. And for the part of repairability, today's laptops are designed to fail between 3 to 8 years of use, if you want to repair them you have to go to the same company that sold it to you. And if it stops supporting your model, you are simply alone. In a computer like this, where most parts are used universally, where you can open it yourself and it is user-friendly, it is much easier to repair it and change parts. We can take laptop batteries as an example, it is the first thing that can fail and begin to degrade, with this computer it is literally 2 screws, when most laptops do not allow you to change any component, in addition to eliminating the warranty of your product if you open the chassis. Yes I know, it does not have a dGPU. But we are talking about the first computer model within the first year of existence of this company and concept. Imagine what Framework could do in 5 years. You could just change the dGPU like you do today on the Desktop PC. Another point of view that we can see is the ecological one. It should be noted that all the projects for computers or modular cell phones were simply from large companies, which had the objective of experimenting and seeing how the market would react. Framework is dedicated to this and that is not a minor difference.

They did change the design for the Surface Laptop 3 onwards, to allow it to be removable with screws. It's not modular in any way, but at least the SSD is replaceable. The removal process is quite similar, screws at the bottom and the keyboard deck opens up and is held by magnets as well

IT admin departs must jump at this. I've worked at IT support in an University during my student years and we saw a lot (not to say A LOT) wrecked ports, where we had to buy an new one, had prfoessors waiting, and all the setup work (data transfer etc) only to replace a broken port... this is pure gold for customer service in a company. Just give them a new adapter and bam! they would be ready to go on the spot...

Why dont you youtubers ask the manufacturers build something better? Like you dave jarrod mathew hardware chunks and so many are there. We want something thin and light with great processor, upgrades, battery life. Not a chunky 2.8 kg laptop or 2500$ laptop. Oh yeah who am i to say anything. I am such a random dude who watch the videos and comments down. I should have million subs then someone will give importance to my comments.

I think one thing reviewers in the US miss is that in poorer parts of the world where people can't afford to just buy a new machine because apple says fuck you, your warranty has run out, this type of laptop would be gold. In parts of eastern Europe and Asia I've heard of people doing micro soldering on motherboards to repair them and being able to live on that due to low labour costs versus device prices.

Look at the advantages. With a little bit of work you can * Clean the laptop yourself inside out. * Order components that are failed and replace them on your own. * Technicians don't have to sell their souls to the devil (read iPhone 12) to repair this lap. You can save a lot of money in labor cost and have peace of mind.

The advantage is the both repairability and upgradability that it has. I have had several laptops that I have loved, worked great, not that old, but the battery starts to take a crap. It could have gone a few more years, easily, if not for the battery, which was not replaceable, hadn't died. This same scenario would be no problem for the Framework machine. Scan the battery QR code, opens the battery page, order a new battery, when it shows up, take 5 minutes to swap it out and you are good to go for a few more years, no risk to your data, easy on your wallet. In the case of new and faster CPUs coming out, yes, you need to replace the whole motherboard component, but I'd rather pay for that than a whole new laptop. If I wasn't getting a brand new free Macbook from work, I'd jump on this in a second.

great idea, i woudnt buy first version, i dont like magnetic keyboard and screen bezel, thats bad idea tbh, easy to fall of and break the part and your not going to remove it that often, so its pointless to have it

Aren't all old laptops before 2010 like this? I upgraded the CPU in my Dell XPS m1330 from 2007 easily by opening the back panel. And I upgraded the RAM and replaced the hard drive with an SSD as well. Those were the good old days, before all laptop makers went after the "thin and light" route. It might sound innovative in 2021, but to me, it's more like going back to an era when users had way more options. Then again, with Intel and AMD changing CPU sockets all the time, the upgradability only goes as far as the current generation of CPU sockets. If you have to buy a new motherboard each time you want to upgrade your CPU, maybe it's better to buy a new laptop by then?

They will make their money back on replacement parts like batteries, ac adapters, LCD screens, keyboards because they are replaceable and you will spend more on the replacement part to keep the laptop you love working than the part is worth. They will make their money back on incremental upgrades like motherboards, LCD panels, backlit keyboards, or new accessories that shrink to fit the type-c module form factor to keep it fresh. They will make their money when people go back to them and buy a tee shirt, skin, a laptop bag or some other swag they end up coming with.

Seriously this modular/framework laptop is not going to move fwd. We don't need this type of laptop. We need an easy RAM upgrade. Easy SSD upgrade modular. Easy GPU and CPU upgrade. For example you want a 16GB RAM. You just slot in a modular. You want a Latest CPU. Sell your outdated CPU and fit in a New CPU. That is the thing we want in a framework laptop. But it will never happen right ? because its just not compatible with the outdated motherboard. So right now ? what is the easier way ? Make the best bargain laptop for user with a lifespan of 3 years. Done.

So everything can be upgraded but your can't upgrade the CPU? I have a 12 year old ROG laptop, the CPU is upgradable, the GPU is upgradable, the RAM is upgradable, the wifi card is upgradable and it can take 3 SSD's. When you open the bottom of the laptop you can get easy access to the fans to clean them etc etc. So don't see the point of this laptop.

It's a risky gamble to do things in the way that they'd be designed sanely, in a world without mindless market externalities. I really hope that Framework laptops find their footing in B2B. That is probably where these kinds of products will shine. If I was a business owner I would totally buy these kinds of devices for my employees. It's a bit more expensive but so so cost-efficient in the long run. You can probably even buy a bunch of spare parts with a stack of these laptops so that there is no downtime if/when a laptop is dropped on the ground, a fan stops working, the battery starts to go to shit, a keyboard key stops being responsive, you spill a beer on it, etc.

The life cycle of a laptop today is my guess is 2-4 years after usage you sell it or throw away, or give it to another person, so why do you need a Framwork Laptop. What most consumers need is a reliable laptop with a reasonable priced extended warranty(3yrs), good after-sale support, unlike Microsoft who give atrocious support.

The rigidity and thickness has a lot of to do with materials and laborious engineering. I don't think the issues like the screen flex and chassis thickness are mainly due to "modularity", but rather due the fact that they simply wanted to make their first product actually affordable. As time goes on I am confident that they will be able to improve the build quality even further.

99% of people would rather pay for the convenience.... Yes, up until the day their laptop breaks. Case in point, I had a $999 laptop break, and the cost to replace the screen as quoted as $799. So it becomes cheaper to buy another used machine, and repairs decline and more stuff ends up in the landfill. On the other hand, if you had this machine, someone could have replaced the LCD panel for $150 or less. So, I would entirely recommend this machine to my completely non-techy friends even knowing they would never open it themselves just because I know when it does break one day, someone else (a repair shop, etc) can very easily order and install the replacement parts at a reasonable cost. If the average person is made to understand that they may pay a little bit more now, but it will save them a huge amount in repair costs, I think it could have more mass market appeal. Also, if you are a person who does like to upgrade laptops every 2 years or so, then right now you may be constantly paying to buy RAM and SSD every time when you could be swapping those components instead. If this product shows anything, it's that you *don't* lose much thinness by making it easy to disassemble.
